Science With 5th and 6th Class (2-10-2015)

On Friday we did Science with 5th and 6th class. We learned  that when an acid and a base are mixed together a chemical reaction occurs. We had so much fun with the 5th and 6th class and we were amazed when the volcanoes erupted! We talked about the experiment first in the 5th and 6th classroom. We learned the 3 stages of the experiment.
  1. Add 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda to the bottle.
  2. Add a dropper full of red food colouring to the baking soda. (We used the droppers to avoid red hands but unfortunately that did not quite work out as planned!)
  3. Add vinegar and watch the volcano erupt. We did the experiment outside.

Ms Treacy talked to the class about the experiment first.

I made a volcano for my student!

We looked after one Junior Infant per group.

Ms Treacy thinks we look like twins!

Welcome to 5th and 6th class.

Let me at the vinegar!

Step 1: Baking soda.

Step 2: We used droppers to add red food colouring.

I love working with 6th class.

Step 3: Vinegar time!

Wow! Yellow lava!!

A wonderful eruption.

Team work!

Covering her ears in case the explosion was loud!

How did they get planning permission to build a shop right beside a volcano! The mind boggles!

Wowsers!

We worked well together.

A very creative volcano.

I am so happy it worked out so well!

I love my volcanic island.

Mrs Houlihan enjoyed the experiment too.

Ms Treacy is delighted she provided the droppers to avoid red hands!
