On Monday we did an experiment with balloons. We knew that a balloon will burst if you stand on it. This is because there is too much pressure on the balloon. But we discovered that if you spread the pressure over a large area then each balloon only supports a little bit of the weight. We put seven balloons on the ground and put a table on top of them. Then we all walked over the table and none of the balloons popped.
At the end we decided to see how many children could fit on the table before a balloon popped. We fit eleven children before two balloons popped.
On Tuesday we were engineers as we designed and built structures out of spaghetti and marshmallows. We had to be careful as the spaghetti was very delicate.
We also did an experiment called ‘Dancing Raisins’ on Tuesday. We poured soda water into plastic cups and dropped raisins in. The raisins sank to the bottom because they are heavier than the water. After a minute the bubbles in the soda water attached themselves to the raisins and they lifted the raisins to the surface. Once they reached the surface the bubbles popped and the raisin sank again. This happened again and again until the soda water went flat so it looked like the raisins were dancing. We all loved this experiment.
On Wednesday we made lava lamps. We put water, oil and food colouring into cups. Then we added an alka seltzer tablet and watched.
This was a little bit like Tuesdays experiment. The oil floats on top of the water because it is lighter. When the tablet is added it makes gas bubbles in the water that float to the top.
On Thursday we made rainbows using skittles and water. We were having so much fun that we forgot to take photos of this experiment!
On Friday we made fake snow for our Arctic theme in Aistear. It was very messy and lots of fun.
